Mining and construction magnate, Bill McDonald, is wading into the milk export game with the aim to build a fully integrated dairy business in Australia.

McDonald's new venture, Camperdown Dairy International, already owns an operational milk powder plant in Melbourne and has plans to revamp a second factory in Camperdown with a view to producing 100,000 tonnes of powder per annum, according to ABC Online.

McDonald will build a 40,000-strong dairy herd in south-west Victoria, and will also source 250 million litres of milk from farmers, according to the report, and he has secured 20-year contracts with dairy buyers in Asia, the Middle East and the United States.

McDonald is also reportedly planning a large investment in the red meat industry.

Late last year, Gina Rinehart’s Hope Dairies also announced plans to to establish Australia's biggest dairy operation, which includes building an infant formula plant in Queensland with a view to source up to 75 per cent of the required milk volume from a company-owned herd located nearby.
