ALDI has implemented tracking across its entire canned tuna range, enabling consumers to trace their tuna back to its source, to ensure it’s been caught in a sustainable fishing area.

According to the discount supermarket chain, The Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) catchment area will be printed on the lid of each can, and consumers can plug it into www.aldi.com.au/traceyourtuna for information on the fishing boat or port of entry.

ALDI said strict supply guidelines, combined with innovative labelling, ensured that all of its canned tuna is now fully traceable.

Every shipment is certified by the caption and the local authority, providing peace of mind that it has been caught under strict governance, according to ALDI, which said the tuna tracing initiative is part of the retailers ongoing efforts to maintain full transparency on the source and high quality of its products.

“As one of Australia’s leading retailers, we take our corporate responsibility seriously. The communities in which we operate are central to our success, so we continually look for ways to ensure our products and services are making a positive contribution to the lives of our customers and their communities,” said an ALDI Australia spokesperson.

ALDI said its partnership with SFP (Sustainable Fisheries Partnership) and MSC (Marine Stewardship Council) assisted it to further form the foundation of its progressive seafood sustainability efforts.

ALDI has also committed to work towards having all wild caught fish sourced through sustainable and equitable methods by 2016, including Pole & Line caught and Fish Aggregating Device (FAD) free methods.
