ALDI is introducing previously overlooked items to its produce section with a new line of small-sized fruit, Li’l Snackerz, which will includes apples, mandarins, pears and bananas.

The range will support local farmers and make lunchboxes more fun, according to the cut-price retailer.

Harris Farm Markets also recently announced it would sell "imperfect" fruits and veggies which won’t be rejected for having a small blemish, a weird shape, or a funny lump, but will instead sell for half-price under a new Imperfect Picks brand.

The fruit used in the new Li’l Snackerz line has historically been used for juicing, as its weight did not comply with retailer specifications.

ALDI says this will enable it to tap into a larger proportion of fresh produce crops, which will in turn provide Australian growers with more consistent and meaningful order volumes.

“Li’l Snackerz fruit is the same high quality, fresh produce that customers expect from their supermarket but simply smaller, due to farming or weather conditions,” said an ALDI spokesperson.

“It will offer shoppers more variety and is a great example of how we are consistently working with growers and suppliers to ensure a maximum utilisation of fruits and vegetables throughout the year.”

The retailer also says the smaller sized fruit is more easily handled by children, who are drawn to the likeable sporty characters on the re-sealable packaging.

“We’ve introduced Arnie Apple, Bradley Banana, Mike Mandarin and Penny Pear as a friendly face showing children the fun in fruit,” said the ALDI spokesperson.

Li’l Snackerz is now available at ALDI stores in 750g packs for $2.99 (Apples, Pears and Mandarins) and for $1.99 Bananas.
