Australian food professionals will soon be able to gain international recognition for their application of scientific knowledge in the food sector thanks to a new program.

The Certified Food Scientist (CFS) program is a first-of-its-kind certification for food professionals worldwide, which will be endorsed by The Australian Institute of Food Science and Technology (AIFST) in partnership with the United States’ Institute of Food Technologists (IFT).

According to AIFST, the CFS program is designed to assess the applied knowledge and skills of food scientists, and assure consumers that food scientists have demonstrated the knowledge essential to their job role.

It will also help employers, practitioners and the public identify individuals with certain knowledge and skills, raise the visibility and credibility of the food science profession through a certification program and promote lifelong learning related to the food science profession.

AIFST president Anne Astin said the CFS course provided important credentials and international recognition.

“Currently there are more than 1,500 certified food scientists from 55 countries around the world as a result of this program, many of whom play key roles in food science, industry, academia, government and other areas. We’re keen to provide Australian food professionals the opportunity to join this important group of industry leaders,” said Astin.
