Terry O’Brien, managing director of Simplot Australia, has been elected as chairman of the Australian Food and Grocery Council (AFGC).

He takes on the position from John Doumani, managing director of Fonterra Australia and New Zealand, who resigned following five years on the AFGC board, the last two as chairman.

O’Brien said despite the fact industry is facing challenging times, food and grocery manufacturers remain optimistic about their future in Australia.

“There has never been a more important time for the food and grocery manufacturing sector to maintain a strong voice,” said O’Brien.

“Industry priorities include regulatory reform to reduce compliance costs; getting R&D tax incentives right along with other measures to boost innovation; and engaging with retailers to improve the competitiveness and sustainability of the food and grocery supply chain.”

“I look forward to leading the AFGC.”

AFGC CEO Gary Dawson said O’Brien brought more than 25 years of industry experience to the role, including two stints on the AFGC Board.

“It’s great to have someone with so much industry knowledge and vitality who will help AFGC take up these important challenges and to work with government to strengthen the current operating environment,” he said.

“I would also like to thank John Doumani for his impressive leadership of the AFGC Board.

“Under his direction, the AFGC has played a key role in development of the National Food Plan, launched the Healthier Australia Commitment and implemented a range of proactive whole-of-industry initiatives.”

The AFGC board also elected Chris Delaney, CEO of Goodman Fielder, to the role of deputy chairman. The position was previously held by O’Brien.
