Sweeteners are one of the most tested food additives in the world but continue to be scrutinised from the media right up to the World Health Organisation.

Recently, the Australian Beverages Council (ABCL) carried out research with keys stakeholders to get a better understanding of perceptions on non-sugar sweeteners and the sphere of influence of these opinion leaders.

The ABCL said, “Despite the totality of the science and regular risk assessments by leading food agencies around the world, there continues to be some uncertainty on the science, safety and use of sweeteners amongst this group.”

As a result, the council said it was important to keep exploring the role of non-sugar sweeteners in the framework of reducing sugar in the diet while maintaining flavour.

It has partnered with industry associations across the Asia Pacific region to host a Sweetener Symposium on 27 June in Sydney. Join world-renowned scientists and Food Standards Australia New Zealand at this hybrid event to continue the discussion.
