A potential takeover by Freedom Foods and US food giant Deans Foods looks like it's no longer on the cards, according to the a2 Milk Company.

Although a2 Milk announced that the offer was not compelling after evaluating it last month, the company said the door was still open for discussion with its suitors.

However, the a2 board is now pointing to recent statements by Freedom to the effect that “The company and Dean Foods have ceased detailed discussions in relation to a2,” and by Dean to similar effect.

“The Company has received no further communication from Freedom or Dean since it advised that it did not consider the Expression of Interest to be compelling,” a2 Milk said.

“Although there has been no formal withdrawal of the Expression of Interest, the board continues to consider that no takeover offer is imminent.”
