A multi-million dollar food distribution centre with a focus on robotics is expected to create up to 550 jobs.

The centre, to be built by SA grocery retailer Drakes Supermarkets has received planning consent from the City of Playford and is fully funded by the family-owned business.

It will be located on a 17 hectare site at Edinburgh North and will have capacity to house close to 23,000 separate lines of products including grocery, dairy, and frozen foods.

A separate distribution and logistics centre located on Stebonheath Road will incorporate more than $12 million of robotics as part of a high-tech warehouse picking system.

About 300 jobs are expected to be created during construction, with a further 120-250 ongoing full-time equivalent positions once the centre is operational by June 2019.

GM Bob Soang said the centre was "a key plank of our group’s vertical integration strategy within the supermarket sector” and would support the forecasted growth of 35,000 new residents in the Playford Council area by 2036.
