A South Australian mushroom farm has come up with a way to offer consumers their daily requirements of vitamin D.
SA Mushrooms has developed the Vitamin D mushroom with the claim that by eating just three, you can achieve the required daily intake of the vitamin.
According to SA Mushrooms MD Nick Femia, everyday mushrooms have an average of 2.3 micrograms of vitamin D per serve, which is 23 per cent of of our daily requirements.
"However, a vitamin D mushroom has at least 10 micrograms of vitamin D per serve (100g, or three medium mushrooms) – the amount most adults need each day,” he said.
In Australia, it is believed that nearly one in four people are vitamin D-deficient.
Femia said Vitamin D mushrooms enable more consumers to get what their body needs through diet.
“More Australians are vitamin D-deficient in winter than in summer, so we thought there had to be a better way... than them standing outside trying to catch some sun or taking a supplement,” he said.
SA Mushrooms is believed to be the second largest privately owned mushroom farm in South Australia.
