Old Kempton Distillery, brand design agency, Denomination, and Chinese investment group, Jinding, have collaborated to create a luxury whisky inspired by the Tasmanian landscape – Cape Hauy.
Tasmania is home to the world’s largest surface exposure of dolerite, a rock that sculpts the island’s vertical sea cliffs. According to Denomination, Cape Hauy’s towering dolerite columns inspired every element of the brand’s visual language, from material to form. The stone stopper captures the texture of the cliffs, and the typography is stacked vertically to mirror the structure of the formations.
Denomination co-founder and CEO, Rowena Curlewis, said the brief was to create a whisky brand with a deep sense of place and a disruptive design ethos.
“Cape Hauy doesn’t just reference Tasmania – it’s carved from it,” said Curlewis.
The spirit is made by Old Kempton Distillery from local grain and spring water, carrying a floral signature shaped by the unique terroir of the Tasmanian environment.
Old Kempton CEO, Martin Turmine, and head distiller, Rob Tyson, headed to China to celebrate the launch of Cape Hauy whisky.
“This whisky was made to reflect the beauty of its namesake, Cape Hauy, and we feel privileged that Jinding entrusted us with their production over the last few years,” the distillery stated on social media.
