Patrick of Coonawarra has released the second edition of its Méthode Range of wines, following the sell-out success of its first release.
The 2021 Méthode vintage takes classic cabernet sauvignon and riesling wine conventions and “flips them on their head”. With further experimentation, trying different winemaking styles, and a brand new process for the Cab Nouveau, winemaker and owner Luke Tocaciu said he’s not afraid of pushing the boundaries.
“Winemaking norms are ever-changing, my dad Patrick Tocaciu did a lot of experimentation with wines, but I think the biggest thing that's changed is that there are no rules anymore. In the past, winemakers would have created a small batch and thought it was interesting, but then would have just blended the wine into a larger, more conventional batch,” Tocaciu said.
Each bottle is individually numbered, hand waxed by the small team at Patrick of Coonawarra, reflecting what Tocaciu calls the “humble warmth” and personalised touch of the brand.
2021 Méthode Cab Nouveau RRP $32.00: an early release cabernet sauvignon. Minimal skin contact, and reverse osmosis technology ensures softness and balance, while holding a freshness and cherry flavour. The reverse osmosis filtration technique removes any large, grippy and astringent tannins, leaving a pure, light, fruit-forward and soft style behind. This cabernet sauvignon works beautifully on the palate when slightly chilled.
2021 Méthode Skinny Riesling RRP $32.00: a left field riesling, challenging the typical Rieslings. More skin contact than v.2020 to dial up the texture, with a bit more lees contact and stirring when it was in oak. Méthode Skinny might appeal to someone who drinks more Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Orange Wines or Pet Nat.
2021 Méthode Eucalypt Cabernet Sauvignon RRP $32.00: a complex cabernet takes the hypothesis that vineyards amongst gum trees take on some aroma and flavour of eucalyptus. The grapes were harvested in close proximity to Red Gums into 1T bins. The resultant wine shows significantly increased eucalyptus aroma and flavour. This matured into a distinctly Australian Cabernet Sauvignon that expresses the environment and place in which it was grown. The eucalypt flavour is quite pronounced, yet develops into a cherry raspberry flavour. This year’s vintage is a richer wine, with more depth in flavour, a savoury edge with raspberry, blackberry, sage and cherry fruit complementing that hint of Eucalypt.
The new range of wines can be purchased on the Patrick of Coonawarra website.
