Coffee brewers and distillers, Broken Bean will now serve Australians a premium coffee liqueur made from cold brew coffee through a partnership with Vanguard Luxury Brands.

The family business from the Central Coast of New South Wales is an evolution of Onyx Coffee Spirits, which worked behind the scenes as a premium, on-premise producer of choice. The breakaway in the form of Broken Bean, which launched in 2022, makes Australian-made coffee liqueur and cocktail creations accessible to Aussies everywhere.

Broken Bean Coffee Liqueur is crafted using pure ingredients in the form of cold brew coffee, Australian wheat vodka and Australian sugar.

The inaugural Broken Bean Coffee liquor contains a coffee blend which is a classic selection of beans from Brazil, Ethiopia and India that are roasted separately before blending, allowing for a darker and more robust flavour profile. The coffee blend is then brewed into a high-strength cold brew liquid, further enhanced by fortification with the vodka to lock in flavour. It is then left to rest and rack for 30 days, allowing the liquid to develop to full maturity before packaging.

Led by cousins and co-founders, Matt Faulkner and Mitchell Faulkner, the expert roaster and brewer team have a decade’s worth of coffee brewing and liquor creation under their belt, responsible for more than two million cocktails served in Australia to date.

“We’re driven by curiosity and continually seek exceptional drinking experiences,” said Matt.

“With Broken Bean we wanted to provide drinkers with innovative cocktail creations using two things Aussies do so well; coffee and spirits. Ultimately, we’re a liquor brand that represents a nation of coffee fanatics,” said Matt Faulkner.

The brand is also partnered with the Modern Cocktail Co (MoCo), created by Vanguard Luxury Brands. Designed for venues in a ready-to-serve format, MoCo sees signature cocktail serves available on-tap at venues across the country, including Broken Bean’s Espresso Martini.

The collaboration also aids with the current hospitality staff shortages by leveraging Broken Bean’s proprietary dispense technology to ensure quality without compromise, every pour.

Broken Bean Coffee Liqueur launched in Australia in May for $60.00 RRP and is available nationally at Dan Murphy’s online, select bottle shops and loved local venues now. It is also distributed by Vanguard Luxury Brands.

Consolidation at the top, restructuring in the middle, and bold innovation at the edges have reshaped the industry’s horizons. At the same time, regulators, brand owners and recyclers have inched closer to a new circular operating model, even as policy clarity remains elusive.
