Melbourne-based technology company, Universal Biosensors, has replaced lab testing for winemakers in over 30 countries, with the development of handheld wine analysis device, Sentia.

With over 2200 devices now in use across more than 30 countries, the Sentia Wine Analyzer enables winemakers to measure sulphur, acid and sugar levels on-site, in minutes, using just a drop of wine.

Originally built for hospital diagnostics, the technology behind Sentia has been adapted to suit the wine industry – delivering fast, accurate, and accessible testing without the need for a lab.

Universal Biosensors CEO, Peter Mullin, said the new technology would be a gamechanger for winemakers around the world.

“The fact that an Australian company is leading this disruption is something we’re incredibly proud of,” said Mullin.

“With Sentia, we’ve put lab-grade accuracy into the hands of the winemaker, no matter the size of the winery or where they're located. Wine is part art, part science. We’re just making the science part easier, faster and more accessible – without compromising accuracy.”

The company has partnered with wine research institutions worldwide to independently verify the accuracy of the Sentia Wine Analyzer, including the Australian Wine Research Institute, California State University - Fresno, University of Missouri, DLR Rheinpfalz, and Pontifica Universidad Catolica de Chile.
