Woolworths has responded to news of Amazon's imminent launch in Australia by creating a special task force dedicated to tackling the potential threat.

 

At its recent annual general meeting, the retailer told its shareholders that Woolworths board member and former US retail executive Kathryn Tesija would head the team.

 

According to several media reports, Amazon is planning to enter the Australian market next year with, among other things, a fresh food offering that would include AmazonFresh, a home delivery service that is already operating in the US.

 

Amazon has also begun opening up physical book stores in the US, as well as pop-up and grocery stores, and according to The Australian Financial Review, Amazon is planning to open physical stores and warehouses in Australia next year.
