Global food giant Unilever has acquired the small Queensland family-owned maker of the Weis Bar.

Unilever existing ice cream brands include Streets and Ben & Jerry's, and the purchase is expected to introduce the iconic bar, which is already sold in North America, Japan, Singapore, Malaysia, Korea, Taiwan and China, to an even broader market.

Weis was founded in Toowoomba 1957 by Les Weis and its core product is the Mango and Cream Bar.

Unilever has reportedly pledged to continue to use the company's Toowoomba manufacturing plant and its 85-strong workforce, source the same ingredients and support the local fruit industry.

The terms of the deal have not been revealed.
