Chinese B2C online shopping site Tmall, has launched a new Michelin-style guide for wine in China called the Tmall Wine Standard.

Australian wine brand Penfolds is one of those to have already signed on to the initiative, along with France’s Lafite, GIV in Italy, Santa Rita of Chile, Mondavi in the US, and Changyu and Monlot in China.

To create the guide, the online marketplace said it enlisted 99 sommeliers and gourmets to taste and categorise nearly a thousand wines according to acidity, sweetness and texture, among other indicators, in addition to offering advice on food pairings.

Last year Tmall launched an Australian wine store operated by Vinehoo.com, one of China’s leading online wine retailers.
