George Weston Foods has completed a $130 million redevelopment of its Tip Top Bakeries facility in Canning Vale, Western Australia. The upgrade follows a fire in October last year, which left the facility operating at reduced capacity and led to a temporary bread shortage across the state.

Tip Top Bakeries managing director, Andrew Cummings, said the expansion project was about ensuring Western Australians could rely on a consistent, local supply of high-quality fresh bread.

“This $130 million investment secures the future of WA’s bread supply,” said Cummings.

“It means greater resilience, stronger reliability, outstanding quality and confidence that fresh bread will stay on supermarket shelves across the state.”

The investment marks Tip Top’s largest bakery upgrade in more than 20 years. The new bread line has the capacity to produce 8350 loaves per hour, effectively doubling previous output and has been designed to create a safer, more modern workplace for Tip Top employees.

The company stated the new state-of-the-art bakery line would secure the future of bread supply in Western Australia, and positions Tip Top Canning Vale as one of the most advanced bakeries in the country.

“This expansion project is about ensuring Western Australians can rely on a consistent, local supply of high-quality fresh bread. It is the culmination of years of hard work from across the Tip Top team who have safely brought to life a world-leading bakery designed for the future,” the company stated on LinkedIn.

The new site prioritises safety, with improved traffic management and reduced manual handling. Solar panels have been installed, centering Tip Top’s transition toward greater renewable energy use.

Western Australia Minister for Food and Agriculture, Jackie Jarvis, said Tip Top is a brand that is instantly recognisable to generations of Australians.

“It’s also not just a brand – it is a major employer and an essential part of Australia’s food system, baking more than one million products and supplying supermarkets, schools, hospitals, food service providers and fast food outlets nationwide,” said Jarvis.

“It was great to attend the reopening of their facility in Canning Vale with the Premier, and to celebrate the important role Tip Top plays in our agrifood sector, contributing to Western Australia’s grain to plate supply chain.”

Western Australian Premier, Roger Cook, said the redevelopment marks a major investment in the state’s food manufacturing sector.

“This world-class facility will support hundreds of local jobs, boost production capacity, and strengthen supply chains right across the state,” said Cook.
