An April Fools' prank played on consumers by Foodco Group's Muffin Break has led to a quirky new flavour launch.

Muffin Break posted the following promotion on its Facebook page on 1 April:

"Do you want a little more bite with your Pizza Pie? Introducing our latest creation, the Scorpion Sting! This Pizza Pie is packed with incredible ingredients, including chorizo, red capsicum, and real smoked scorpion! Available from select stores only, for a strictly limited time."

It was met by such reactions as:

"HOW DARE THEY DO THIS TO OUR SCORPION BROTHERS!!!!!!"

and

"I thought this sounded bloody delicious and was excited that we were getting something different haha."

In response to consumer curiosity, Foodco Group decided to release the flavour as part of its Pizza Pie collection for one day only at Muffin Break in the Entertainment Quarter, Sydney, on 12 April.

Half pizza and half pie, the Scorpion Sting will include actual bugs.

The Scorpion Pie was the brainchild of the company's senior food consultant Louise Turner, who said she was excited to explore interesting and alternative flavours.

"Bugs and insects are a common sustainable food source in many countries around the world," she said.

"Insects are a natural source of protein and globally becoming part of people’s everyday diet.“

According to the UN, insects will be a crucial part of our future diets.
