A pasta product developed in Australia by San Remo has won a silver for innovation at the SIAL China food trade show which was held in Shanghai last week.

San Remo's Pulse Pasta beat more than 200 products that were chosen from over 500 submissions around the world to be named runner-up in the SIAL China Innovation Competition 2017.

Pulse Pasta, which is currently only sold in IGA in Australia, is made from peas, lentils, chickpeas and borlotti beans and is gluten free, lower in carbs and higher in fibre and protein than wheat-based pasta, according to its maker.

Sapmer's sashimi tuna fillets from Mauritius won the gold award, and Silk's Original Skinned Walnut from China came in third in the competition which assessed attributes such as health, packaging and convenience.

San Remo pulse pasta was first shortlisted as one of 10 finalist products, before snaring the silver award.

The Australian-owned company has operations right across the country and exports its products to 35 countries.

The company's export account manager Bruno Scheidt (pictured below holding the award) accepted the award on behalf of San Remo.

Packaging News

The World Packaging Organisation has named 234 winners for the WorldStar Packaging Awards 2026, which were selected from 481 entries submitted across 36 countries.

ACOR is calling on the Government to urgently introduce packaging reforms or risk the collapse of Australia’s plastic recycling sector and face millions of tonnes of plastic waste polluting the environment.

As 2025 draws to a close, it is clear the packaging sector has undergone one of its most consequential years in over a decade. Consolidation at the top, restructuring in the middle, and bold innovation at the edges have reshaped the industry’s horizons. At the same time, regulators, brand owners and recyclers have inched closer to a new circular operating model, even as policy clarity remains elusive.
