Pringles says the removal of the plastic lid on the 53 gram packs is the first step in its move to find more sustainable packaging across the product range.

The snacks brand manager for parent company Kellogg’s Australia, Kavita Desai said even though it was a small change, it would have positive environmental impacts.

Kellogg’s says a new and improved seal, made by Sonoco, is a multi-layer laminate structure, with numerous tests conducted ensure its strength and improved durability.

Despite the seal being non-recyclable, the removal of the plastic lid is expected to remove 26 tonnes of plastic waste per year in Australia.

“This is a promising first step as we continue to innovate and implement new ways to be sustainable with our packaging across the board," said Desai.

The removal of the plastic cap will see a 48 per cent reduction in plastic on each 53g can.

Coles has started stocking the lidless Pringles 53g Sour Cream and Onion variety, with the lidless 53g Original variety from available from August.
