Meat processor Primo Smallgoods has unveiled Australia’s largest single rooftop solar installation at a Guinness World Record-breaking celebration at its Wacol factory in Queensland.

The JBS-owned company announced the plan to cover 75 per cent of its Brisbane facility rooftop - 25,000 square metres - with 9700 solar panels in June last year.

The now completed 3.2-megawatt system will generate 4869 MWh of power in its first year and save 1.2 million tonnes of CO2 over 20 years, the equivalent of powering 20,032 homes for one year.

To mark the occasion, Primo officially set the Guinness World Record title for the ‘Largest Serving of Breakfast Rolls’, serving up 2091 Primo bacon and egg rolls to Primo workers and Foodbank charities, with BBQs powered entirely by solar energy generated by the rooftop.

The never-before attempted Guinness World Record took 140kg of Primo shortcut bacon, 2160 Australian eggs, and 2100 rolls, all topped off with a choice of BBQ or tomato sauce.

The effort took just under two hours and involved over 50 Primo workers.

Primo Foods chief operating officer Bruce Sabatta said with global meat production being responsible for nearly 15 per cent of the world’s carbon emissions, Primo wanted to promote the sustainability of natural resources while providing quality products that meet the needs of customers.

“We’re thrilled to be celebrating two huge firsts for Australia today; the launch of the country’s largest single solar panel rooftop here at the Primo factory in Wacol, and an official Guinness World Records title for the Largest Serving of Breakfast Rolls, complete with our very own delicious shortcut bacon.

“We know Aussies love a good bacon and egg roll for breakfast, and we wanted to do something to celebrate with our staff and the local community.”

Australia has stepped firmly onto the global stage in support of an ambitious treaty to end plastic pollution, with Environment Minister Murray Watt announcing the nation’s commitment during the United Nations Ocean Conference in France. Meanwhile, local environmental leaders are urging the government to back its global words with accelerated domestic action.

Plastic resin made from recycled milk and juice bottles at a Pact-operated recycling facility in Melbourne meets US FDA safety requirements for use in HDPE food and drink packaging.

Packaging and IT recycling operation Close the Loop anticipates its second half EBITDA will fall by 50 per cent compared to the first half, on revenue that at around $99m will be similar to the first six months.
