New Zealand-based dairy company Fonterra expects some disruption to milk collection due to road closures resulting from recent earthquakes.

Staff, however, are reportedly safe, and there has been no major damage to any of Fonterrra's manufacturing sites.

Some farms that remain without power, or those that cannot be reached by tankers due to road closures, may need to dispose of their milk.

Fonterra’s farm source CEO Miles Hurrell said Fonterra would contact farmers directly if disposal was required.

Road conditions in Kaikoura mean there are approximately 30 farms in the area that may not have their milk collected, while others around the country may have late collections as tankers are rerouted.

Meanwhile, most of Fonterra’s manufacturing sites around the country are now fully operational and processing milk as usual.
