Omni-channel commerce will reportedly be made simpler by the introduction of a new GTIN Management Standard.

The existing GS1 Global Trade Item Number (GTIN) Allocation Rules have been replaced, and the new standard is expected to make it easier for companies to make decisions, manage GTINs, and save time and money.

The new standard is aimed at addressing growing frustration with unclear rules and unnecessary added costs.

A global food manufacturer, The JM Smucker Company, was one of the first to apply the new GTIN management rules when evaluating the identification changes needed for 125 of its products.

“It made it easier to make clear decisions and communicate these decisions across the organisation, saving the company time and money,” industry standards director Lori Bigler said.

“Using the new rules, we completed the evaluation of all 125 products in minutes instead of days.”
