New solar abattoir to be built in Queensland

The shift to renewable energy continues with a new abattoir that will be powered by solar and solar-fuelled hydrogen to be built in Gladstone, Queensland.

The facility will be partly powered by a 78MW solar farm, with a 33MW solar-powered hydrogen facility to service its boiler, reports RenewEconomy.

Asia Pacific Agri-Corp (APAC) will reportedly spend $308 million on the project with a view to capitalising on consistent low energy pricing that solar power can provide.

The solar farm will help control processing costs by combining surplus solar power with its waste water into an onsite hydrogen plant.

The project will deliver 308 construction and 335 operational jobs, and will be capable of processing 2400 head of cattle per day.

Construction is expected to begin in May next year and be completed by 2021.
