Woolworths has outlined plans to open 108 new stores across a range of outlets including its supermarkets, and its liquor outlets, Dan Murphy's and BWS.

Woolworths currently employs more than 180,000 people and the retailer said the new stores would create 6,981 new jobs in this financial year across its Australian business divisions.

The news comes hot on the heels of a similar announcement by rival Coles, which recently announced plans to open 70 new stores in the next three years as part of a $1.1 billion investment in the local food retail sector.

Coles' new stores will be located across Australia and are expected to create 8,500 full-time equivalent positions, and more than 8,200 construction jobs.
