The global company largely responsible for Australia's booming coffee culture has announced the establishment of a wholly owned subsidiary in Australia.

Coffee roaster Lavazza is looking to grow its presence in Australia with the creation of a new Melbourne-based company called Lavazza Australia.

The new business builds on an already established relationship with Lavazza’s former Australian distributor Valcorp Fine Foods.

Lavazza Australia, headed by Nigel Meakins, has taken over all the company’s business operations in Australia, including sales, marketing and supply chain management.

According to the company, Australia is one of the top countries in Lavazza’s international development strategy, and growth in roasted and ground blends, and the A Modo Mio capsule system, is anticipated.

Lavazza will work closely with Valcorp as a service partner.

It already has two training centre sites in Australia, which are devoted to coffee and product innovation training.

The new team is believed to include more than 20 Valcorp staff, focused on ensuring the coffee brand meets the needs of the Australian consumer.

Lavazza is also targeting the hospitality sector, at-home coffee drinkers and the office market with its Blue Pod Coffee Co.
