Haigh’s Chocolates has appointed Peter Millard as the company’s new CEO, the first time in its 110-year history that someone outside the Haigh family will lead the business. He will take over from Alistair Haigh, who has been in the position for 30 years and has announced his retirement, on 4 August.

Millard is currently COO of the company, and was selected for the CEO role after an interview with an external panel, to ensure he was fit to take on the job. He started out as a supply chain manager in 2006, and has held the COO position for four years.

“Having had the privilege to work closely with Alister for nearly two decades, I have been inspired by his ambitious, humble and personable leadership,” said Millard.

“Alongside the family I remain passionate about preserving the enduring quality of Haigh’s premium chocolate to delight generations of chocolate lovers for years to come.”

One of Australia’s oldest family-owned chocolate makers, Haigh’s Chocolates will continue to be family-owned, with Alister remaining on the board alongside fourth-generation family members, Simon Haigh and Sara Fitzgerald. In addition to his board role, he plans to take up an ambassador role.

After starting to work at Haigh’s in 1973, Alistair was appointed CEO in 1995. The company has since tripled in size, now producing over 1000 tonnes of chocolate annually. The transition in leadership comes during a significant time for Haigh’s, with the completion of its $130 million manufacturing facility in Salisbury South set for later this year.

“Reflecting on my time, it’s incredible to think how far we have come over the years with more than 300 chocolate varieties, 900 employees, 21 stores and grown tenfold all while remaining true to the heritage and quality Haigh’s is known for,” said Alister.

“Peter has been integral to our success here at Haigh’s, responsible for the businesses day-to-day operations while proudly spearheading the development of our Salisbury South facility alongside a high- performing team.

“His work ethos is a testament to Haigh's values of contribution, determination and trust. I feel confident knowing that the business will continue to thrive and grow under his exceptional leadership,” he said.

Packaging News

Industry leaders have renewed calls for national packaging reform, warning that Australia's manufacturing resilience, recycling investment and sovereign capability remain vulnerable without policy action to create demand for locally recycled content and provide a more level competitive playing field.

Australia's emerging soft plastics recycling infrastructure is ready to process significantly more material, according to Soft Plastic Stewardship Australia, which has launched a three-month campaign aimed at boosting consumer returns and strengthening domestic supply of recycled resin.
