A new glassware range is the latest tool in The Last Straw campaign to reduce the use of plastic straws.

The Wave Glass has an internal wall that sits down into the vessel - separating it into two chambers. One chamber holds liquid mixed with crushed ice and garnish. The other only allows the chilled liquid from the bottom of the vessel to flow out.

The Last Straw founder Eva Mackinley says plastic straws have become a symbol of the waste-free movement in the last couple of year. "While the market is becoming full of disposable alternatives vying for primacy, I have always
believed the heart of it is about just using less," Mackinley says.

Australians use over 10 million straws a day, which now feature in the top ten of all ocean pollutants.

Only 50 of the bespoke, handblown glasses have been made so far, but Wave’s ambition is to replace straws completely across bars far and wide. "From a small ripple a mighty Wave grows," it said.

Luke Ashton and Wave Glass

Founder and owner of Sydney bar This Must Be The Place, Luke Ashton, developed a cocktail to introduce the new glassware. With inspiration from countries whose coastlines are affected by plastic waste wash-up, 'Nu Wave' features: Talisker Whisky from the Isle of Skye; young coconuts from the Pacific Islands; pandan from Thailand; and lemon myrtle from Australia.
