Sales of free range eggs have increased as more producers move to grow their invesment in hen welfare.

Sunny Queen Farms, for one, said sales volumes for its free range eggs was up by 19 per cent for 2016/17.

The producer claims to provide six times more space for hens than the national standard.

In 2016, Sunny Queen said it would ensure its free range eggs were laid on farms with a maximum outdoor density of 1500 hens per hectare.

Also last year, the Minister for Consumer Affairs agreed to the introduction of a national standard requiring eggs labelled as 'free range' to require an outdoor stocking density of 10,000 hens per hectare or less.

In light of this, consumer advocacy group Choice has just launched a national 'genuine free range egg hunt' to draw attention to false free range claims.

Choice said because consumers were paying a significant price premium for free range eggs, they needed certainty they were getting what they paid for.

Choice has asked consumers to download its newly updated free CluckAR app, scan cartons, and mark the location in the app when they find genuine free range eggs.
