App-based food delivery disruptor Foodora is exiting Australia in what it describes as a strategic shift to higher-growth markets.

Foodora has been part of an increasingly crowded online food delivery market in Australia where it competes with Uber Eats, Menulog and Deliveroo.

The company said in a statement that its decision to depart the Australian market was in response to “a shift in focus towards other markets where the company currently sees a higher potential for growth”.

“We wish to express our gratitude to all of our customers, contractors and employees for their dedication to Foodora Australia, and for allowing us to be a part of their everyday,” Foodora's Australia country manager Jeroen Willems said.

"It has been a privilege to bring the food you love right to your door."

Foodora has been criticised over pay and conditions for its delivery drivers and still has two lawsuits to defend here - an unfair dismissal case and a sham contracting claim.

The company says it will cease operating in Australia by August 20.

Australian-headquartered, global fibre-based packaging manufacturer The Detmold Group has opened a 19,000-square-metre manufacturing and warehousing facility in India.

Orora’s Australian cans operation has delivered another year of strong growth, helping the packaging group maintain steady underlying earnings despite challenging conditions across the glass market.
