JBS Australia and Primo have signed on with food relief agency Foodbank to launch a major new beef initiative to provide welfare agencies with more than 130 tonnes of sausages every year.

The sausage manufacture is donated by Primo, and initial cattle were donated by Wellard and Austrex, with JBS matching this donation and also agreeing to donate a regular supply of trim to the program while the cattle donations gear up to the number required.

The program is currently supplying five thousand kilograms of sausages a fortnight to Foodbank in each state, which in turn distributes them to those in need across Australia via 2,600 welfare agencies.

Director of Foodbank Queensland and supporter of the Australian agricultural industry, David Crombie, said the program needed the support of beef suppliers to ensure its ongoing success.

“We are currently supplying enough meat for more than 75,000 meals a month and are hopeful donations will continue to be forthcoming to ensure we can keep up the supply well into the future,” he said.

“With one kilogram of sausages providing enough for seven meals, a small donation of just one beast provides the meat for many meals to disadvantaged Australians and helps make a significant difference to the lives of those less fortunate.”

The program has also secured several key suppliers to Primo including Devro, Snopack, Cryovac, Labelmakers, and Visy, and Scott’s Refrigerated Transport is donating its services to transport the sausages to Foodbank to each state every fortnight.
