In an industry first, Fonterra’s ingredients and solutions brand, NZMP, has launched an online calculator to help customers access the emissions profile of individual New Zealand NZMP products.

The NZMP Carbon Footprinter gives customers the ability to access the latest emissions data for the major NZMP New Zealand products, as well as forecast potential emission reductions for those products out to 2030 – based on the assumption that Fonterra successfully achieves its climate targets.

Last year the co-operative launched its Climate Roadmap, which outlines its plans to achieve its climate targets and make progress on its ambition to be net zero by 2050. The installation of a 20-megawatt electrode boiler at Fonterra’s Edendale plant in New Zealand was one of the latest steps for the dairy giant to stop using coal by 2037.

Fonterra director of sustainability Charlotte Rutherford said the online calculator was one way the co-operative was helping customers understand how Fonterra’s climate targets relates to the products they purchase.

“We’ve been reporting on sustainability for some time now and the level of data we have throughout our manufacturing operations and down to an individual farm level is of huge value to many of our customers.

“We know that for many of our customers we are a large part of their Scope 3 emissions. The transparency of the footprinter means they can easily assess with confidence the latest emissions profile of the product they purchase from us,” said Rutherford.

NZMP global markets director sales and marketing Gillian Munnik said the new Carbon Footprinter is believed to be the first of its kind and scale in the dairy industry, and makes it quick and easy for customers to access NZMP product emissions data.

“We are being open and transparent and making it simple for our customers to understand how our climate plans and actions directly relate to the ingredients they purchase from us.

“Fonterra’s New Zealand farmers already have one of the world’s lowest on-farm emissions footprints, and this new tool demonstrates that NZMP has the dairy expertise and mindset to support our customers with their own emissions reduction journey,” said Munnik.

Customers can select from NZMP’s major New Zealand sourced dairy product categories, input the volume bought and easily retrieve the emissions data of the products they purchase. Customers will also be able to request carbon footprint certificates for specific New Zealand NZMP products, which have been independently verified by globally recognised sustainability accreditor Toitū Envirocare.
