A large number of Australians are going hungry as a result of the rising cost of living: even those that are employed.

A new report from Foodbank Australia says hunger is affecting both employed and unemployed, children, the retired, students, singles and families.

CEO Geoff Starr says everyday Australians seek seek food relief due to a lack of funds to pay utility bills, rent, and accommodation.

The report indicates that food relief has an immediate and far-reaching impact.

"In addition to having their hunger addressed, people report longer-term benefits such as improved physical health, being able to plan for the future, and feeling able to look for work or get a job," Starr said.

“It is the commitment of Foodbank that everyone has access at all times to nutritious and healthy foods.

"While it provides food for 166,000 meals a day to over 2400 charities for distribution to people in need, it’s simply not enough. Help is needed."
