Equal has responded to concerns about sugar consumption with the launch of two new sweetener products – Equal Spoonful and Equal NEXT.

Equal Spoonful is a real sugar substitute, with one teaspoon (8kJ) giving equivalent sweetness to one teaspoon of sugar (70kJ), and nearly nine times less calories. It comes in a 113g jar with a resealable twist cap to aid in sprinkling and pouring.

Secondly, Equal NEXT blends sweeteners to create a particularly sugar-like taste, according to Equal.

It comes in a 100g pack with 100 sachets. Each sachet (15kJ) is equivalent to two teaspoons of sugar (140kJ), providing portion control for users.

Merisant Asia Pacific regional manager Angelo Di Benedetto says the sweetener market has seen little innovation in recent years, and taste has stopped people using them.

Both new products contain maltodextrin, and sweeteners aspartame and Acesufame-K. They also include phenylalanine.
Recommended retail price is $4.99 for Equal Spoonful and $5.99 for Equal NEXT.
