End Food Waste Australia (EFWA) CEO, Tristan Butt, has stepped down after less than a year in the role, to pursue other professional opportunities. The Board has appointed current director policy, communications & strategic engagement, Wendy Hughes, as acting CEO.

Butt took on the EFWA CEO role on 5 May 2025, after former CEO and founder, Dr Steve Lapidge resigned in February. The organisation stated Butt led EFWA through a strategic reset and organisational transition during his tenure, building on the foundations of the CRC and helping position the organisation for its next phase of impact and growth.

“The Board thanks Tristan for his contribution during this important period and wishes him every success in his future endeavours,” stated the company.

“End Food Waste Australia remains focused on delivering its mission and strategic priorities, with the Board confident in the strength of the leadership team and the continued momentum of the organisation’s work with its partners.”

The Board will shortly commence a process to appoint a permanent CEO. In the interim, Hughes will lead the organisation.

EFWA stated Hughes has played a central role in shaping the organisation’s strategy and partnerships and is well placed to lead through this period of change. Originally from regional South Australia and now based in Cairns, she has a longstanding interest in food systems and sustainability.

“I'm honoured to step in as acting CEO of End Food Waste Australia,” said Hughes.

“My focus is on continuity and momentum, ensuring programs and partnerships continue as planned while the Board undertakes a formal recruitment process. EFWA remains committed to halving food waste by 2030 and to reframing how we think about food security across Australia.”
