Designated drivers will be rewarded with free drinks as part of a program which encourages safe partying over summer.

Queensland and NSW drivers will be given free non-alcoholic Coca-Cola drinks at close to 120 participating venues as part of the Designated Driver summer program over December and January.

Mark Filmer, general manager of hotels, restaurants and cafes for Coca-Cola Amatil, said the program would be rolled out further if successful in these states.

At the start of the night, designated drivers can identify themselves to bar staff and receive a wristband which entitles them to free draught soft drinks.

They then can choose from a range that includes Coke, Coke Zero, Diet Coke and Sprite.

A similar scheme was successfully piloted in Western Australia in 2014.
