The New South Wales government has launched its NSW Skills for Net Zero program in collaboration with CSIRO, aiming to connect businesses with talented tertiary students through paid internships. Applications are now open for businesses with a net zero-focused project to host a tertiary student intern.

A skilled workforce is essential if New South Wales is to reach net zero by 2050. NSW Skills for Net Zero aims to support businesses to build their net zero workforce and to guide graduates to a net zero career pathway.

Funded by the New South Wales government and delivered by CSIRO, the program will fully facilitate 100 paid, decarbonisation-focused internship placements from 2025 to 2028, helping to create a sustainable pipeline of professionals to turn New South Wales into a clean energy superpower.

Host workplaces will provide practical experience and mentoring to a tertiary student intern, who will assist them with reaching net zero targets. They will benefit from:

  • access to a high-quality pool of tertiary student interns to address skilled workforce gaps
full recruitment and support from our experienced team throughout the duration of the intern placement
  • a $2,500 maximum payment towards the cost of internship wage (paid on internship completion)
  • flexible work options, by requesting tertiary students on a part-time or full-time basis anytime throughout the year.

Further details, including eligibility criteria, comprehensive guidelines and how to apply can be found at csiro.au. Tertiary student applications will open in mid-2025.
