Coca-Cola is flipping its iconic Kings Cross sign upside down in commemoration of its local history throughout October to mark its 80th year in Australia.

The first Australian-made coke bottle rolled off the production line in Waterloo, Sydney in 1938 - eight decades ago.

The sign's reorientation will mark a first for the 132-year old brand and will kick start anniversary celebrations throughout October.

The Kings Cross sign arrived in 1974, just ahead of the opening of the Kings Cross tunnel, creating a well-known Sydney landmark.

In 2015, the sign was updated and replaced by more than two kilometres of rope LED lighting. Coca-Cola auctioned off the original letters, raising $100,700 to raise money for The Wayside Chapel.
