The Australian Food and Grocery Council (AFGC) has welcomed the federal government's decision to establish an Anti-Dumping Commission and the introduction of measures that will enhance the anti-dumping system as a welcome step in supporting domestic food and grocery manufacturing.

AFGC CEO Gary Dawson said that the move was warranted by the threat that product dumping poses to Australian manufacturers.

“In the consumer goods sector, an ability by government authorities to respond quickly to evidence of dumping is vital in order to have any impact and we would hope the announced Anti-Dumping Commission is a step towards speedier responses to anti-dumping complaints,” said Dawson.

“The government has accepted recommendations of the Prime Minister's Taskforce on Manufacturing in adopting measures to address growing concerns that current anti-dumping arrangements are ineffective.

“The establishment of a well resourced Anti-Dumping Commission to investigate complaints will particularly help small- and medium-sized businesses that are most under threat from unfair dumping of imported goods in the domestic market.”
