The Australian Institute of Food Science and Technology (AIFST), an organisation representing agri-food system professionals working in the food industry, is gearing up for the 2024 edition of its annual convention. The event will be held at the Sydney International Convention Centre from 6-7 August.

The theme for AIFST24 will be Food Science: Navigating Our Future, and will invite discussion from leaders and innovators in technology, sustainability, and academia around the challenges and opportunities present in the agri-food industry.

Food science and technology will play an important role in the future, so AIFST24 will feature scientific and food industry speakers from across the sector, as well as face-to-face networking opportunities.

Key areas covered will include food safety, advances in health and nutrition, sensory and consumer science, food security and resilience, advanced food manufacturing, AI, policy regulation, innovation, and sustainability. Participants can expect a diverse array of presentations, panel discussions and networking opportunities designed to inspire collaboration and innovation.

AIFST CEO, Fiona Fleming, said that the organisation was thrilled to bring together some of the brightest minds and most forward-thinking professionals in food science and technology for this year’s convention.

"The convention serves as a pivotal platform to explore how the latest technologies and advances across multiple disciplines can drive sustainable practices and solutions," she said.

Key highlights of AIFST24 include:

Keynote Addresses: Insights from experts shaping the future of technology and sustainability, including Food and Beverage Accelerator (FaBA) director, Dr Chris Downs, who will present the JR Vickery address on Day 1 of the convention.

Panel Discussions: Engaging debates on pressing issues and emerging trends in the field.

Networking Opportunities: Connections with peers, potential collaborators, and industry leaders. A key highlight of the AIFST Convention is the food and wine networking evening, an opportunity to create new connections and reconnect with industry colleagues. Likewise, the Rise and Shine: Career Connect Breakfast on Wednesday 7 August is an event open to all students, young members, and AIFST 2024 mentors and mentees.

The conference is expected to draw attendees from across the agri-food sector, including professionals, researchers, policymakers, and students, all united by a common goal of uniting industry professionals in the science of feeding the future.

With four weeks to go, visit the AIFST website and dedicated convention page for program details and to register.

At the same time, regulators, brand owners and recyclers have inched closer to a new circular operating model, even as policy clarity remains elusive.

Pact has reported a decline in revenue and earnings for the first five months of FY26, citing subdued market demand, as chair Raphael Geminder pursues settlement of the long-running TIC earn-out dispute.
