Lion Australia beer brand, XXXX, has released a limited-edition XXXX Tropical lager to raise reef sustainability awareness, developed in partnership with the Great Barrier Reef Foundation (GBRF).

XXXX Tropical has aromas of mango and passionfruit, along with subtle citrus notes. It offers a smooth, crisp flavour profile featuring tropical fruit notes, balanced by light malt sweetness and a hint of hop bitterness.

Lion Australia sustainability director, Justin Merrell, said XXXX has been around for over 140 years, and plans to stick around for many more.

“We’re doing our part to ensure the next generation of Aussies can enjoy the good life and the reef,” said Merrell.

“This includes being the first and only Australian beer brand to partner with the Great Barrier Reef Foundation, a long term million-dollar investment. We are committed to protecting the reef for future generations, and XXXX Tropical is a tangible expression of that commitment.”

To celebrate the launch, XXXX is donating $100,000 to the Foundation’s work, to restore seagrass meadows that the reef life calls home. Restoration of these vital ecosystems provide essential habitat for marine life, while also supporting carbon sequestration, improving water quality, and helping protect coastlines from erosion.

Since first joining forces in 2022, this latest initiative follows a series of activities in the partnership between XXXX and GBRF, including providing financial support for initiatives that help farmers evolve their irrigation practices and reduce downstream impact on reef water quality.

GBRF managing director, Anna Marsden, said the organisation was proud to continue its partnership with another Queensland icon, XXXX, and giving Australians an opportunity to support the restoration and protection of critical reef habitats for future generations.

“The vital role seagrass meadows play in the health of our Reef cannot be overstated,” said Marsden.

“They act as the ocean’s lungs, storing carbon, protecting our coasts and providing habitat for marine life such as endangered turtles and dugongs. Together, we can all help protect the Reef and its incredible marine life for future generations.”

XXXX Tropical is available exclusively at Coles Liquor stores nationwide, and in the on-premise at Hamilton Island for a limited time, starting from RRP $56.00 per case.

Packaging News

The World Packaging Organisation has named 234 winners for the WorldStar Packaging Awards 2026, which were selected from 481 entries submitted across 36 countries.

ACOR is calling on the Government to urgently introduce packaging reforms or risk the collapse of Australia’s plastic recycling sector and face millions of tonnes of plastic waste polluting the environment.

As 2025 draws to a close, it is clear the packaging sector has undergone one of its most consequential years in over a decade. Consolidation at the top, restructuring in the middle, and bold innovation at the edges have reshaped the industry’s horizons. At the same time, regulators, brand owners and recyclers have inched closer to a new circular operating model, even as policy clarity remains elusive.
