South Australian brand, Old Fat Unicorn, is taking wine to the distillery with the release of its new Golden Horn range. Golden Horn showcases the company’s flagship Barossa reds – a Shiraz and a Cabernet Sauvignon, finished in ex-whisky barrels for a bold new flavour.

The company’s new Golden Horn range blends luxury whisky notes with dark red wines, adding complexity with flavour notes of vanilla and caramel. At least 25 per cent of the blend is finished in ex-whisky barrels to achieve this effect.

Old Fat Unicorn winemaker, Brittany John, said that including portions finished in used whisky barrels gives the wine an interesting flavour twist.

“The old whisky barrels impart nuances of caramel and malt with a hint of aromatic spice, adding another dimension to these rich and textured wines," she said.

The Golden Horn Whisky Barrel Barossa Shiraz 2022 has a base made from top-quality Barossa Valley Shiraz fruit, with a dark and rich palate. The ex-whisky barrel vanillin flavour finish.

The Golden Horn Whisky Barrel Barossa Cabernet Sauvignon 2022 has deep saturating cassis and blackberry flavours, and a smooth, plush finish to balance the full-bodied flavours. Light maturation in ex-whisky barrels introduces subtle caramel and creamy vanillin oak nuances.

The new Golden Horn range pays homage to its Old Fat Unicorn lineage, with a new-look label and bottle shape.

Dan Murphy’s assistant category manager - Red Wine, Ricky Young, said that the new-look labels are unique, and the blend is perfect for a dinner with guests.

“The wine is expertly crafted with smooth, velvety depth that the ex-whisky barrel ageing provides,” he said.

The Golden Horn Whisky Barrel Shiraz 2022 is now available from BWS for $24 and from Dan Murphy’s for $18.99. The Golden Horn Whisky Barrel Cabernet Sauvignon 2022 is also available from Dan Murphy’s for $18.99.
