The James Squire Tall Tale Tropicana Spring Ale from the Malt Shovel Brewery is a limited edition release with guava and passionfruit flavours.

Head brewer Haydon Morgan said the brewing team envisioned the ale as "a uniquely refreshing brew enhanced with tropical fruit and hops; set to shape spring drinking as the climate warms up".

The drink is light in body and mild in bitterness, with a pale ale base.

“It may sound like the tasting notes would be better suited to a fruity sauvignon Blanc. But trust us – it’s a beer,” Haydon said.

According to Haydon, the recent allure of fruit beer has been further enhanced by the flourishing craft beer industry in Australia.

“The Americans have historically led the way in terms of fruit beer, traditionally brewing cherry stouts and pumpkin seasonals.

Over the last 15 years we’ve seen a significant volume increase as more brewers experiment with different fruits in beer."

The release of the special edition James Squire Tall Tale Tropicana Spring Ale follows the brewery's January release of Hop Father and June release of Cabin Fever.

Consolidation at the top, restructuring in the middle, and bold innovation at the edges have reshaped the industry’s horizons. At the same time, regulators, brand owners and recyclers have inched closer to a new circular operating model, even as policy clarity remains elusive.
