Following a recent trademark battle between Australia and NZ for the use of the term ‘Manuka’, Capilano has launched Capilano Active Manuka Honey MGO 100+ and MGO 550+ into Woolworths.
Capilano Active Manuka Honey contains the bioactive ingredient methylglyoxal (MGO), which is responsible for Manuka honey’s researched antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and wound healing properties. The higher the MGO number, the more potent the honey’s bioactive properties.
The product releases follow the end of a long running campaign by New Zealand’s Manuka Honey Appellation Society (MHAS) to trademark and claim ownership of the name “Manuka honey”. The New Zealand Intellectual Property Office (IPO) ultimately ruled that NZ honey producers had no exclusive claim to the term “Manuka honey”.
Once a controversial debate, the Australian Manuka Honey Association (AMHA), along with the Australian honey industry, welcomed the NZ IPO ruling as a "common sense outcome".
Made for everyday use, Capilano Active Manuka Honey MGO 100+ has a rich, smooth, caramel taste. Capilano Active Manuka Honey MGO 550+ is the most potent Manuka honey in the Capilano range, ideal for keeping on hand year-round for wound healing, skin care and sore throats.
Capilano COO and Australian Manuka Honey Association chairman Dr Ben McKee said Capilano was grateful to have the opportunity to increase the availability Manuka honey.
“We know how important supporting local beekeepers is to Aussie families.
“More and more consumers are looking to incorporate bioactive natural foods into their diet. With the launch of these two new all Australian Capilano Manuka honey products we are giving everyone even more reason to shop and support local,” said McKee.
Capilano Active Manuka Honey MGO 100+ is available on Woolworths shelves nationally, retailing for $11.00 for 250g, and Capilano Active Manuka Honey MGO 550+ is available exclusively via Woolworths online for $50.00 for a 250g jar.
