Global food safety solutions company, the Neogen Corporation, is increasing efficiency of high-volume food safety testing, with the launch of the company’s Petrifilm Automated Feeder.

The Petrifilm Automated Feeder builds on 40 years of innovation across Neogen’s Petrifilm range. The product allows labs to more efficiently process microbial tests, able to automatically feed and enumerate up to 300 Petrifilm Plates in 33 minutes.

The system is specifically designed to meet high-volume food safety testing requirements, labs that process over 100,000 quality indicator tests per year. The automated system provides consistent results, and means technicians no longer need to manually load plates into the reader or count and record initial results, improving lab productivity.

Neogen president and CEO, John Adent, said that this introduction is just the latest step in the history of Petrifilm innovation to help make labs more efficient and productive.

“By reducing the time burden on technician staff, Neogen is helping labs evolve and efficiently meet growing demands and to deliver safe, high-quality food, while meeting testing requirements for food and ingredients,” he said.

“Neogen is excited to be at the forefront of investments in innovation, microbiology, and food safety to evolve the modern lab.”

Neogen’s feeder and Petrifilm Plate Reader Advanced combine hardware, software, and trained artificial intelligence systems, to help labs overcome challenges associated with technician turnover, human error, and time-intensive training for new staff.

Midwest Labs supervisor, Jon Hammond, said that the ability to load the feeder with up to 300 Petrifilm Plates and walk away had been a great time-saver.

“The integrated software allows us to export results directly to our laboratory information management system. Now, we can spend more time on analysis and less time loading plates.”
