Australian & New Zealand packaging companies have received the second highest number of WorldStar Packaging Awards behind Germany, with Wellman Packaging, Planet Protector Packaging, Zipform Packaging, OF Packaging, Omni Group, Sealed Air and CHEP Australia all winning multiple awards.
ANZ PIDA Award winners have been internationally recognised, with 27 awards across 12 categories in the prestigious 2022 WorldStar Packaging Awards, which are run by the World Packaging Organisation (WPO).
The global packaging design competition attracted over 440 entries from 37 countries, which represented a 30 per cent increase in submissions. Thirty-six judges from across the globe deliberated over the 440 submissions and determined 240 winners for the 2022 round of the Awards program. In terms of the number of awards won by country or region, Germany narrowly pipped ANZ to the winner's post, with Japan coming in third and China fourth.
"This is the highest number of awards ever won for the ANZ region, which is an outstanding achievement and recognition for the innovations that are being developed in this region," AIP executive director Nerida Kelton told PKN, noting that only companies that have won Australasian Packaging Innovation & Design Awards (PIDA) are eligible to enter the WorldStar Packaging Awards.

The categories where ANZ designs were recognised include Food, Beverage, Labelling & Decoration, Health & Personal Care, Household, Packaging Materials & Components, Transit, eCommerce, Fresh Fruit & Vegetables, Electronics, Medical & Pharmaceutical and Other.
Among ANZ companies achieving multiple awards, Wellman Packagingreceived four awards, two each for Squeezepak sauce bottle and Colgate Palmolive rPET bottle; Planet Protector Packaging received three for Vaccine Protector; Omni Group received three for VentX Unico; Zipform Packagingreceived two, one for Pana Organic and one for rPUMP; Sealed Air received two, one for Junee Lamb and one for NZ Post Jiffy Shortuff mailer; O F Packagingreceived two, one for Brookfarm and one for Zero Co, and CHEP Australiareceived two for the 1/6th Retail Ready pallet.

The WorldStar Special Awards, of which there are a number of ANZ entries, will not be announced until the 2022 WorldStar Awards ceremony, which will be held in Milan, Italy in May during IPACK-IMA.
Applications for the 2022 Australasian PIDAs will be open in late January. The PIDA Awards, run by the Australian Institute of Packaging, are the exclusive feeder program for ANZ region for the WorldStar Packaging Awards.
