Australian dairy companies are leading the way in the domestic food and beverage merger and acquisition scene according to a review of activity over the past year.

Ten transactions took place in 2015 in the domestic dairy sector alone, according to a review by acquisition and divestment advisory business, Comet Line Consulting.

The expected spike in transactions was associated with the arrival of the Asian dining boom in 2015, according to authors David Baveystock and Ben van der Westhuizen.

“Demand for dairy and related products led to a number of transactions, with this sector being the most active in the food and beverage industry,” they write.

The pair also reviewed transactions in a number of other sectors confectionery, value added meat processing, foodservice, non-alcoholic beverages, food delivery, pet food and seafood.

The review indicates that 2016 is shaping up to be a dynamic year with a number of potential merger and acquisition opportunities, according to Baveystock and van der Westhuizen.
