Costco Australia has collaborated with a vegan food company to sell plant-based meat in its stores for the first time.
The Fry Family Food Company has been making plant-based meat alternatives for 27 years, but Costco is the first to buy its 15-pack of Traditional Burgers.
The RRP of the pack is $14.59 for 1.5kg, and on a par with the cost of similar meat-based beef products, the company says.
“Our aim as a company is to make plant-based food accessible to the masses,” international marketing director Tammy Fry says.
The burger is the first plant-based product to be sold in the freezer and chilled prepared foods section of Costco.
Fry’s 100% plant meat burger contains 14g of protein, whereas typical meat-based burgers contain 13g. It also contains more fibre – 6.2g versus 2g – and has 5.6g fat instead of 18.3g. It also has no cholesterol compared with meat-based burgers, which contain around 68g.
